{"id":1534,"date":"2026-02-17T11:21:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-17T15:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jfciii.com\/blog\/?p=1534"},"modified":"2026-03-24T11:34:03","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T15:34:03","slug":"namng-suggestions-for-manual-accessibility-and-quality-assurance-testing-file-names","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.jfciii.com\/blog\/2026\/02\/17\/namng-suggestions-for-manual-accessibility-and-quality-assurance-testing-file-names\/","title":{"rendered":"Naming Suggestions for Manual Accessibility and Quality Assurance Testing File Names"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Over the years, I have developed a naming convention for files during manual accessibility and quality assurance testing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Excel File Name<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I found it easier to store my findings in an Excel file, similar to the one used for the older DHS Trusted Tester version 4 or similar files, named as follows.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Below are the main parts of the file-naming convention.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Website or application name<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Server<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">PROD<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">DEV<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">TEST<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">UAT (Use Acceptance Testing)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">STAGING<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Date<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">An example would be the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">DSH \u2013 DEV \u2013 DT20260217<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SSA Application \u2013 PROD \u2013 Dt20260217<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Note that each page would have its own tab that would be the name of the page or an abbreviation, since Excel tab names can only be 31 characters long.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Screenshot Naming Convention<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I use a similar naming convention for screenshot filenames that includes the page name and a short description of the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Website or application name<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Server<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">PROD<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">DEV<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">TEST<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">UAT (Use Acceptance Testing)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">STAGING<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Page Name<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Short Description of the Problem<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The same applies\u00a0to\u00a0screenshots; a few example file names would be the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">FBI \u2013 TEST \u2013 About Us Page \u2013 Missing ALT Text for Images under the What\u2019s New Heading<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">IRS Intranet \u2013 TEST \u2013 Home Page \u2013 Poor Color Contrast of the Focus Rings in the HEADER MegaMenu<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">WHD WOW \u2013 UAT \u2013 Login Page \u2013 Not Able to Activate the MegaMenu Drop-down Items with a Keyboard<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Issue Tracking Software Problem Names<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I also use a similar pattern when naming issues in issue-tracking software to indicate whether the problem is an accessibility, functional, or content issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Again, the name convention is similar to the others, but is as follows.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Website or application name<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Issue Types<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Accessibility<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Functional<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Content<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Server<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">PROD<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">DEV<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">TEST<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">UAT (Use Acceptance Testing)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">STAGING<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Page Name<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Short Description of the Problem<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A few example issue names would be the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">FBI \u2013 ACCESSIBILITY \u2013 DEV \u2013 About Us Page \u2013 Missing ALT Text for Images under the What\u2019s New Heading<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">IRS Intranet \u2013 FUNCTIONAL \u2013 TEST \u2013 Not Able to Open or Close All Show hide Content with One Button<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">WHD WOW \u2013 CONTENT \u2013 UAT \u2013 Login Page \u2013 Confusing Text In Second Paragraph Under the \u201cNews\u201d Heading<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Conclusion<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">By using this naming standard, you can more easily group issues, meaning all the problems for one website or application.
